Alexa vs Google Assistant: which voice assistant is best for your smart home?

These codes have to be kept safe if you remove and wish to re-add a device at a later date. HomeKit also requires a hub in the form of an Apple TV, a HomePod, or a compatible iPad that must be turned on and connected to the network in order to operate. Although I’m happy with Google Assistant, if I was starting over from scratch today I would give some serious consideration to Siri, HomePods, and the whole Apple ecosystem.

To access more complex options, such as colors and brightness for smart bulbs, you’ll probably have to long-press. No subscription is required, but if you’re counting on Google Nest products for home security, you’ll want a Nest Aware plan. The base tier extends video event history to 30 days, and adds familiar face detection as well as alerts when mic-equipped devices pick up alarms or breaking glass. A more expensive Aware Plus tier upgrades to 60 days of event history, plus up to 10 days of continuous video recording for devices that support it . When you buy one smart speaker, you’re basically committing to that line of speakers because you need to spend some time making them useful and getting used to their quirks. So the different products you can buy to supplement or upgrade your smart speaker experience could move your needle.

Amazon Echo vs Google Home: verdict

Another consideration when selecting voice assistant is your choice of video streaming device. The increased price of the Apple speakers may not be a huge deal if purchasing just one or two speakers. But if your goal is to get a smart speaker into many rooms in your house, the price can really add up. While you may not want two songs playing simultaneously, both devices have music streaming options that work for every type of consumer. After tallying the results, we found that Google Assistant is the best virtual assistant, narrowly edging out Alexa. But the best Google Home compatible devices don't necessarily top the best Alexa compatible devices nor the best HomeKit devices.

Google Home is just a variant to use the Assistant and to get a complete experience you use all the devices on which Assistant is configured for a wholesome experience. Assistant is also available on Pixel and it's other Android brethren!! But nowhere I saw being mentioned about using Assistant on phone to search for maps or songs which might have also given better results for directions say. In our final counts, Google Assistant and Alexa tied for the most total points, but Google narrowly edged out Alexa in the number of first-place finishes. Siri, meanwhile, landed in third place in both measurements, though it was only slightly behind on total points. Overall, all of the virtual assistants were more capable than in previous editions of our shootout, revealing improvements across the industry.

Amazon Echo vs Google Home: smart features

A Chromecast makes it possible to stream your favorite music and movies to the TV from your phone, and new additions to the Nest Hub Max allow you to stream directly to the smart display. Another important consideration is the number of third-party devices that a platform supports. The biggest names in the smart home field (Philips Hue, LIFX, etc.) work with all three of the major platforms, but there are smaller companies that support only one of the three. Just wanted to add that I love the Alexa app bc I can control all 4 kids Fire time limits/parental controls from it, eliminating the need to change them each physically. I also use the Alexa app for the alarms in each kids’ room to set them for school/church.

It is powered by the search engine's web of information and is cleverer overall. Alexa, on the other hand, relies on the installation of skills – individual, app-like sets of related voice commands focussing on certain topics or abilities. Handled and activated through the Alexa app on smartphones, these can range from getting information on local transport times, or to activating voice-controlled games. Both assistants can listen for a few seconds after your first voice command, so you don't get weary of repeating wake words. The feature is called Continued Conversation on Google and Follow-up Mode on Alexa.

Alexa vs Google Assistant: Languages

When it comes to third-party support, Alexa has the widest reach. Google Home works with more than 30,000, coming in behind Alexa in terms of third-party support. Modern smart home devices tend to work with both of the major platforms, however. We kind of fell down that path years ago when we purchased our first Google Home smart speaker.

If you’re sticking to limited fare, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference in effectiveness because both handle the basics perfectly well. But for more complicated commands or queries, the Google Assistant gives Google Nest speakers the edge in this matchup. One simple test we tried was to use speakers from each company playing music in the bathroom while taking a shower, with each speaker set to full volume and placed in the same spot. (What can we say, who doesn’t love music while in the shower?) For this test, we used the lowest-end speakers, the Echo Dot and the Google Home Mini. While the music from the Echo Dot was blurred and somewhat drowned out by the running water, the Google Nest Mini came through loud and clear — it was so clear and loud that we didn’t even need maximum volume. Apple HomeKit is both the easiest and hardest in terms of adding devices.

Best smart home system: which is the top ecosystem for you?

Not only was it able to add both paper towels and a copy of Destiny 2 to my shopping cart, but it also told me my order qualified for free shipping. But then, it stuck me in a loop of accepting terms of service, and I could complete the order only via the Google Assistant app. Google Assistant's results were pretty close to those from Alexa. It generally gave solid, fast answers with context, though Google's AI failed to understand my question about why the sky was blue . Google's program was the only one to correctly identify the all-time leader in stolen bases, Rickey Henderson.

There's no right or wrong approach really – Google's is simpler, but Alexa's encourages faster and broader development and support from third-parties. Alexa and Google Home each support up to six user accounts, though Google handles its accounts much better than Alexa. For Google, you can add anyone to your home for free as long as they have a Google account.

Alexa vs. Google Assistant: Voice recognition

And despite the fact that you do mention it in other sections - you seem to have forgotten that Siri on other devices like the Apple TV, iPad and Apple watch CANNOT do all of those things. The Google Home and the Google Home Mini, by comparison, are available in only 20 countries and can speak only English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch and Japanese. However, Google Assistant does support multiple versions of some of those languages. Not only can it give you a sense of how long it will take you to get someplace, but it can also offer you directions and automatically start GPS navigation. While Siri can get transit directions as well, it does a mediocre job of answering questions about traffic, since it just kicks you to the iOS Maps app. When you're ready to leave the house, you may be tempted to use a virtual assistant to find your best route.

This makes it difficult and fairly expensive to switch to a different voice assistant. We use Spotify to manage our music and playlists, and it works well with the Google Assistant and our Google smart speakers. The bottom line is that all three voice assistants have more information and capabilities than anyone could possibly utilize. And with each passing day, the answers to random questions we may ask the assistant become more accurate and complete. Again, your location may determine what other music services you'll be able to access on your Google Home.

Both brands have location-based reminders where you can get a reminder upon arriving home, to work, or custom location. For example, if you ask for a reminder to get eggs at Walmart, the smart assistant will ask which store you want to use and give you a reminder on your smartphone when you get there.

For faster access, you can group devices or add them to your favorites, which places them in an easily accessible spot on the devices tab of the Alexa app. Add Alexa to your car – Connects to the Alexa app on your phone and plays through your car’s speakers via auxiliary input or your smartphone’s Bluetooth connection. Designed for the road – With 8 microphones and far-field technology, Echo Auto can hear you over music, aircon, and road noise. Home Assistant, for those unfamiliar, is an open-source tool used to control smart home devices over your local network, rather than requiring on cloud services. It works across many different devices and allows for in-depth automation as well. With that in mind, some have wondered what the future of voice control for smart home devices might look like.
